Blame It On Lola

So there’s a saying:

Success means doing 100 things, and 99 of them fail.

If it’s been a while since you’ve gone out on a limb with 100 pitches for new paid business, 2021 may be your (and my) year. Here’s why.

After years of dried-up writer marketplaces, 2020 found people reading voraciously again and desperate for new content to explain our rapidly changing world (or provide escape from it).

A Uruguan-American freelance journalist named Lola Méndez whom I follow on Twitter pitched her brains out, ended up with assignments coming out of her ears that we all celebrated along with her, and was totally transparent about what she got paid.

It reminded me of my abundant corporate and magazine days, and got me hungry for that kind of professional success again, especially since I’m limiting my advocacy work to my eight-hours-a-week pro bono as Metro Atlanta Bicycle Mayor and God only knows if I’ll ever get to the Peace Corps (currently delayed possibly forever).

It’s time to work for money again. (Here’s my portfolio.)

So, I’m going out on a limb and pitching 100 new writing projects this year. They will run the gamut from articles to books to white papers to website content (and more).

I’ll mention a few of them here on what I’m calling Pitch Monday each week, and I’ll shout a few out on social media as well. I’ll document what happens, and share my results like Lola did.

One thing leads to another, and I always trust the journey. Decide your own definition of success and go for it, too!

Look for the Pitch Monday posts, plus I’m listing them on a new 2021 Pitch page here on this blog. Follow along to see what happens!

If you are in a position to hire a seasoned professional writer and you see something that may be of interest to your publication, site, or other outreach, please contact me to see if it is still available or to custom-create something that meets your specific needs.

In the meantime, you may enjoy some of my other published articles and books.

Also, if you know local writers who cover topics you need covering, please reach out to them. Many have seen their businesses be completely destroyed the past few years. Also hire Lola. She is astounding.

Okay. Time to start climbing.
