The okra and peppers are finishing. The greens are just starting to fill out (they were late to germinate this year due to the lingering heat and lack of rain). I just planted a whole bed of garlic that won’t be ready until next June. The food pantry garden I steward won’t supply all that much food during this assault on dignity about to happen with the non-funding of SNAP food benefits in the United States starting this upcoming Saturday. But Rough Draft Atlanta did a beautiful job of summarizing some of the available options for those in need. Read that article here.
If you would like to take an action to do something to help, volunteer at your local food security organization, including helping at community gardens that donate to those in need (I volunteered at the excellent urban farm at the Chattahoochee Nature Center for two months this year — they need help harvesting and planting Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings, plus check out the Dunwoody Community Garden as well as Garden Isaiah at Temple Beth Shalom in Sandy Springs). They, like me, are growing food as quickly as they can.
A little idea for my fellow bike riders? I’m carrying cans of soup on my rides now and leaving them in Little Free Libraries. It may not seem like much, but maybe it is.
If you are wondering why I care so much about food security (besides the actual humanity of it), watch here:
