Bamboo Cold Frame

I’m not sure when the first frost of the season will descend upon us (killing the basil and peppers), but the fall lettuce seeds were late to get going due to the lingering heat so they’re gonna need some protection at the food pantry garden to mature. Now’s the time to get ready.

Remember all that bamboo I harvested from a park and then dragged in my bike cart to the food pantry garden that I steward? A fellow volunteer and I built a trellis with it for summer crops. Now, with it no longer needed as a trellis, I just cut some of it to size to make a cold frame — basically a cage over a garden bed, which I’ll drape with gauzy fabric called row cover. That adds the requisite 10 degrees or so to the bed, giving it just the oom-pah-pah it needs to survive the frosts. (Note: a light frost is a friend to hardier greens like kale. It converts its starches to sugar, making it extra delicious.)

People are hungry — not just for food, but for information about how to grow food. Hope this helps. Find out more from my blog and book, Food for My Daughters.

Another way to help folks, for my fellow people traveling at the speed of bike (or foot) around their communities? Don’t miss this “souper” idea.
