This is Ms. Brownlee, our 7th selection in this 12 Days of Nice Strangers feature. She took her public school 7th grade language arts class on a two-mile walk (on the multiuse path where I was Traveling at the Speed of Bike) while each student carried two gallons of water as a way to bring to life the book they just read, A Long Walk to Water. They were also raising money to donate to water.org. Last year, the 7th grade donated $1300.
The kids were so excited and proud to tell me what they were doing, and the teacher had perfect control while giving so much freedom to the students. It was refreshing and made me feel hopeful for the future. That’s what’s nice about bike riding. And teachers.
