I hesitate to post this, because people can be mean. But this is too important.
A driver killed a 10-year-old who was riding a bike in Metro Atlanta a couple of days ago. A driver knocked a child off his bike in my neighborhood recently. Drivers are hitting seasoned adult male cyclists almost every day around Metro Atlanta (the posts fill my Facebook and Twitter feeds). Every day across the USA, people of all ages and abilities are being killed or seriously/permanently injured by drivers of motor vehicles (including a 7’6″ former basketball player who is now paralyzed after being hit from behind). A shocking number of these are hit-and-runs (as was what happened to me in July 2020).
I tried for years to change the dangerous-by-design roads where I live and can now officially say I failed. You are needed urgently before a tragedy occurs.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is being questioned today at a hearing about his transformational plan to “build back better.” As a former mayor who led his city to achieve Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community certification, he knows what it takes. Listen to Pete. And may there be good-paying jobs that save lives and boost local economies in our near future.
