A small hand in the Super Bowl

IMG_4716Yesterday I had a very small hand in the significant series of murals currently being painted with support by the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee, the City of Atlanta, and the WonderRoot arts organization — and you can, too! Simply sign up for volunteer opportunities here.

I signed up for two hours for the mural being painted by artist Shanequa Gay at the Vine City MARTA station, directly across the street from Mercedes Benz Stadium (where Super Bowl LIII will be played in just six weeks). She pointed me toward brushes and paint, and she charged me with filling “holidays” and other spots that had been missed or uneven. The escalator squeaked rhythmically, trains rumbled underneath, passersby said hi, the sun speckled across the chilly morning, and two meditative hours flew by so fast I couldn’t believe it was time for me to leave already (and frankly, I didn’t want to).

If you have extra time, have been curious what it’s like to paint a mural in public, or want something to do with a friend or two, this is a great way to be part of the Super Bowl team during the holidays and beyond. At least ten of the eventual thirty murals are currently done or in production, and I’m already having a ball Traveling at the Speed of Bike to visit them all. More exciting news about that is coming soon — stay tuned!
